Sanctuary Ocean Count with Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary

At Garden Island Rentals, we’re proud to spotlight an annual shore‑side conservation event that brings visitors and locals together with Kauai’s incredible marine wildlife. Every winter, the Sanctuary Ocean Count — a signature educational outreach and community science project hosted by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary — invites people of all ages to help observe humpback whales right from the shoreline.

Held three times each whale season, this event raises awareness about humpback whales, the sanctuary’s mission, and the wonderful opportunities for shore‑based whale watching around Kauai and the other Hawaiian Islands.

During each count, which typically runs from about 8 a.m. to 12 noon, participants tally humpback whale sightings and record surface behaviors. Because it’s an Ocean Count, observers are also encouraged to note any other species they see — from sea turtles to seabirds — helping deepen our connection to the ocean community that shares this place with us.

This meaningful initiative thrives because passionate volunteers step up to care for our āina and the magnificent creatures that call our waters home, reminding us all of our shared role in protecting and cherishing Hawaii’s marine environment.

If you’re interested in taking part and helping count whales from shore, you can sign up online through the official Ocean Count registration page.
