Outdoor Adventures

October is an excellent month to experience the outdoors in Kauai. From hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and mountain tubing, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Hike the Waimea Canyon Trail

View of Waimea Canyon

Sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the Waimea Canyon is known for its deep valley gorges. It has challenging hiking trails and short walks to lookout points. This out-and-back trail will take you to Waipo'o Falls, where you can stop for a swim. Wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots and bring plenty of water.

  • Where: Waimea Canyon State Park
  • Difficulty:  Intermediate
  • Distance: 3.8 miles
  • Elevation: 1000 feet
  • What to bring:  Water, sunscreen, light snack
  • Duration: 2-3 hours

Snorkel and Swim at Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach is known for its consistent sunshine and is one of the most popular spots for snorkeling. In October, the pleasant weather makes it a great time to spend a whole day swimming, snorkeling, barbecuing, and relaxing. The beach is an easy walk from the parking lot. The cove is medium-sized and packed with colorful fish of all shapes and sizes.

Lifeguards are on duty, monitoring swimmers and snorkelers. Before heading to the water, checking in with the lifeguards about current conditions is a good idea. Kids love the protected swimming area. There are excellent tide pools to explore, and they are full of marine life. Sea turtles often come close to the shore, so give them plenty of space—at least 30 feet.

Mountain Tubing

What could get better than this? Steady flowing water will take you through a former Lihue Plantation irrigation system on an inner tube, where towering mountains and the Wai'ale'ale Crater will surround you. You'll experience flumes and tunnels during your journey. The three-hour tour gives you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the views from the comfort of an inner tube.

  • Where:  Lihue, Kauai
  • Cost: $156
  • Age Recommendations: 5 years and older
  • What's Included:  Tubes, headlamps, gloves, picnic lunch, and helpful guides. Rental wetsuits and water-friendly shoes are available upon request.

Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

Located 180 feet above the crashing waves, Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge sits on the remnants of a volcanic vent, offering spectacular views of the Pacific as well as wonderful viewing opportunities for bird watchers.

In October, the refuge is exceptionally peaceful, and you might spot seabirds like red-footed boobies, great frigatebirds, and Laysan albatross. You may even spot the Hawaiian goose, which is both Hawaii's state bird and the world's rarest goose. The refuge is an excellent spot for catching glimpses of spinner dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, sea turtles, and even humpback whales, which begin to appear offshore from October through April. Sightings of whales have already been spotted this month in Kauai! Native Hawaiian coastal plants thrive along the bluffs, adding another layer of beauty to this unforgettable spot.

The refuge is home to the Kīlauea Point Lighthouse. Built in 1913, it is a big part of Kauai's history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The visitor center has exhibits and displays about the lighthouse.

Best Family-Friendly Waterfalls to Visit in October

Wailua Falls

Wailua Falls

Wailua Falls, located just north of Lihu'e, is one of Kauai's favorite waterfalls. The twin falls flow into a pool of green water below. You may even recognize this waterfall as it appeared in the opening credits of the TV show Fantasy Island. You can view this waterfall from the road, making it an easy stop for visitors.

To reach the falls, head north from Lihu'e and follow Ma'alo Road in Hanamā‘ulu, winding uphill for about three miles. If you visit in the morning, you might catch a rainbow shimmering through the mist as sunlight hits the falling water, an unforgettable sight, especially in October, when the air is crisp and the crowds are fewer.

Opaekaa Falls

Opaeka'a Falls is one of Kauai's most accessible and picturesque waterfalls, dropping 151 feet over a verdant cliff into a hidden pool below. "Opaeka'a" means "rolling shrimp," which were once abundant in the stream and would climb waterfalls like these.

To view the falls, head north on Kuhio Highway (Route 56), turn left onto Kuamo'o Road (Route 580), and drive about two miles. Clear signage points to a designated lookout on the right, where you can safely admire the falls' dramatic plunge.

It is important to note that hiking to the falls' base is illegal and dangerous, so stick to the official overlook. After taking in the views, walk uphill from the lookout and across the road for another great view of the Wailua River valley and interior plains.

Uluwehi Falls

Uluwehi Falls, also known as Secret Falls, is a favored waterfall in the Wailua River Basin. The best way to view the falls is to book a guided tour, rent kayaks or a canoe, and hike to them independently. It usually takes about 45 minutes to kayak up the river, followed by a 20-minute hike through the rainforest along the floor of the Wailua River Valley. When you reach the falls, you can enjoy a well-needed refreshing swim. For the best kayak experience, here are some options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is October the Hurricane Season in Kauai?

Hawaii's official hurricane season is June through the end of November; however, August and September are the peak months. Travelers in October typically enjoy calm and pleasant weather conditions. Checking the local weather before planning your trip is a good idea.

Are the Waterfalls in Kauai Flowing in October?

October typically sees more rain than the summer months. This, of course, is great for the waterfalls. The additional rain creates stronger flows and greener scenery.

What Should I Pack for a Trip to Kauai in October?

Due to the warm and pleasant temperatures, packing light is key. Bring breathable clothing, a light jacket, a rain jacket, and comfortable shoes for walking and hiking. Bring swimsuits for beach days. A waterproof backpack is handy for outdoor adventures.
